IKEA Kitchen Remodel Before & After

Here's a few of our favorite IKEA kitchens that we've remodeled for our clients… (You can find a complete list of our favorite IKEA Kitchens here…)

Here's another we just finished for our client Cassandra 🙂

LET'S CREATE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN -->

IKEA Kitchen Cabinets Quality

One of the first questions asked is “are IKEA kitchen cabinets good quality?”

And we’d have to say that after years in the home improvement industry, and being introduced to IKEA’s cabinets, we’d have to say…

Yes…

IKEA’s cabinets are made out of MDF (MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard) wrapped in a very durable melamine finish…

And no, MDF is not the same thing as particle board… It’s MUCH stronger and can be used for the same building applications as plywood…

In short, MDF is an affordable material without sacrificing on durability and strength…

And if you’re thinking “but what if it get’s wet?”

Let me break something down for you…

Water has the power to destroy anything after long exposure… But here’s the difference between water damage with real wood vs MDF…

Real wood will mold…

MDF will dissolve…

And to be honest, I’d rather have my cabinets dissolve with water damage than have a mold problem…

But at the end of the day, they’re both destroyed…

IKEA Kitchen Cost: Better Than Most Other Cabinet Manufacturers

LET'S CREATE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN -->

IKEA is popularly known for being able to furnish a home for like, $20…

Kidding, but I’m not too far off 🙂

And that’s something that they’ve also included with their kitchen cabinet line…

The remodel cost of an IKEA kitchen remodel (I’m talking cabinets, appliances, countertops, labor, etc included) run on average from $15k-$40K…

I’ve seen JUST CABINETS for some manufactures come out to the same price… Which to be honest is NUTS…

A basic 10x10 kitchen cabinet order from IKEA starts at about $899 and can be as high as $2,999… But this is a small kitchen with basic cabinet layouts and includes nothing but cabinets…

We’ve worked with a few clients that had a little sticker shock when their cabinets came out to $6k for the mid-range finish that IKEA offers…

But this was due to every cabinet have drawers, pullouts, etc… It all adds up, but if you stick with the $15k-$40k price point for your entire kitchen, you’ll be perfect for an IKEA kitchen…

(There's also an IKEA kitchen sale every 90 days or so... Here's 13 ways you can prepare for the next IKEA kitchen cabinet sale...)

IKEA Kitchen Cabinet Accessories: More Bells & Whistles Than You’d Get From Any Other Manufacturer

So let me qualify that statement…

Other cabinet manufacturers provide the same accessories that IKEA offers, but you’re going to pay an arm, leg, and your first born to have them…

You can get more bang for your buck when it comes to accessories, magic pullouts, drawer organizers, etc when you decide to go with IKEA's cabinets... PERIOD.

Check out this review from Sillyputty over at ApartmentTherapy.com:

My partner used to work as a kitchen designer for a super high-end German cabinet company, and we bought Ikea cabinets for our kitchen remodel.

The boxes are built exactly the same way as the $100,000 kitchens he used to work with, and they use the same brand hinges and drawer slides!

The Euro cabinet system is SO MUCH EASIER to install than American style cabinets.

They have been in for 3 1/2 years, and we haven't run into a single issue. The hardware is still soft-close, and the cabinets and doors/drawer fronts are holding up great.

I honestly can't recommend them highly enough. - sillyputty

IKEA Kitchen Design: Creativity At It's Finest

Most of our clients initially think that they're kitchen will be limited in functionality when deciding to go with IKEA, but that couldn't be further from the truth (especially if you're as savvy as our designers & contractors are)...

If you don't have any design experience (and you have a TON of patience for IKEA's design software) you could easily design your own kitchen with their software...

IKEA uses a "light" version of 2020 design software that is web based and allows you to design your own kitchen in their stores or at home...

The only downside to their software IS that it's web based and that there are thousands of people at any given time trying to design their kitchens with 3D rendering... And if you know anything about rendering, it can be painfully slow...

Now imagine that on a shared web server x thousands of users... Let's just say it can be pretty frustrating with a lot of "wheel of death" spinning on your Mac or PC...

(And if you don't feel comfortable designing your own kitchen, but still have your own ideas to contribute, no problem... we can help!)

IKEA Kitchen Door Styles

All of IKEA's cabinets are Euro-styled, which already gives them more of a modern look to them, but for specific styles we've added pictures of finished kitchens in each style below...

IKEA Kitchen Warranty: The Best 25 Years Of Your Life

One of the more attractive features of having an IKEA kitchen is that your cabinets are covered by a 25 year warranty...

This warranty covers wear and tare on the doors, drawer fronts, finish panels, molding, toe kicks, and all of the moving hardware...

The most common issue with IKEA cabinets is the damage that can occur during delivery... All you do is take your damaged piece to IKEA, and they'll replace it, no questions asked...

We've done a lot of IKEA kitchens along with our contractors... And we've never had an issue where a real warranty issue came up...

And I highly doubt you will either... But just in case, you at least know you're covered 🙂

How Long Does It Take To Do An IKEA Kitchen Remodel?

This is a bit of a tricky question... But the average time it takes to remodel an IKEA kitchen is about 7-14 days...

And that includes demo, cabinet installation, countertops and the whole 9...

This really depends on the size of your project and how much construction your kitchen remodel will require...

If you're staying within the footprint (i.e. not changing the layout and just replacing your kitchen cabinet for cabinet) then you can expect to be don in as little as 3-5 days...

Now if you're working with a contractor that understands the IKEA process, this is definitely possible... But if you're working with a contractor that has little or even zero experience with IKEA, you can add a week...

We've worked hard with all of our contractors to create a system that completes kitchens as quick as possible, all with maintaining the highest quality of workmanship & quality...

Our Dallas team for example just knocked out a showroom with 3 full kitchens in 4 days... Granted they were long days and he had a larger crew, but the kitchens were 100% by the end of day 4...

IKEA Kitchen Installation Cost

Here's the going rates for contractors that install IKEA kitchens:

  • $95-$125 per cabinet (depending upon how far you are from the store)
  • $25-$35/cabinet for installation of all of the crown, light rail & toe kick
  • Scribing $375-$600 depending on the size of your project
  • $35/panel or filler piece
  • $150-$250 for removal of the IKEA packaging (it's A LOT of cardboard, plastic & foam...)
  • $199-$499 depending on your location (our guys normally charge $499 because the cabinets are assembled offsite and then delivered to your home... It allows for more control of your schedule in minimizing the amount of time you're under construction.)
  • $250 to secure your island/peninsula to the foundation

Now keep in mind that these prices can vary from contractor to contractor, and from job to job... But it's a pretty accurate ball park for you to gauge the budget of your project...

If you're thinking of buying countertops from IKEA, think again... They sell really high quality quartz countertops, but you can find the same high quality materials for much less elsewhere...

For example, their Frosty Carina or London Gray sell for $89/sqft... We've seen it sold for as low as $79/sqft else where...

Now if you have major electrical, plumbing or framing work that needs to be done, then you can expect to pay a bot more for your project...

Below is a sample estimate from one of the contractors we use for our IKEA kitchen projects:

Sample IKEA Estimate

Also, below I've attached what we call the Reverse Estimate...

Essentially, it's an excel spreadsheet with all of the pricing put in for you... This will allow you to create your own estimate and use it as a budgeting guide... You're welcome 🙂

IKEA Kitchen Reviews: What Other Homeowners Are REALLY Saying

All in all, homeowners love their IKEA kitchens... But you don't have to take our word for it...

"I have done 2 remodels both with Ikea cabinetry. Both turned out very well, the kitchen in particular was awesome. My partner put together all the units and did the levelling. We had the ikea people put in the bench top. All up the quality was 10/10 and with the money saved we splashed out on modern appliances. I should add, all the cabinetry is pull out so there is no awkward reaching. The cabinets were the best ikea ones available, solid wood fronts..." - Johanna in Perth

"Love 'em. Ikea cabinets were by far the least expensive option in our area, and the quality has been at least as good as any "traditional" manufactured cabinets that we saw. They have held up well and are a good value - which is particularly important in a neighborhood like ours where the property values do not support a very expensive kitchen remodel. I do recommend that you look into buying hardware from another source to avoid the "This Came From Ikea!!!" look." - Learned Foot

"Ikea cabinets are surprisingly well built. My husband and I remodeled my parents' kitchen 5 years ago and they are still in great condition. I def. recommend them for the quality...-megchicago
