The materials...

Well, for the most part...

Are the same...

Most custom kitchen cabinet shops use particle board or plywood for their cabinet frames and drawer boxes...

Most custom kitchen cabinet shops us MDF (medium density fiberboard) for their doors & drawer fronts...

Semi custom kitchen cabinets are made of the EXACT same material combination...

Once the frame of each cabinet is built, then you need to consider the hardware (Hinges, drawer runners...)

Most cabinets these days are coming with "soft-close" everything...

The most popular hardware solution for soft close door hinges and soft close drawers are coming from BLUM....

BLUM is the industry leader in providing the highest quality hinges and drawer runner systems on the market...

And custom kitchen cabinet shops aren't "making" this hardware, their simply buying them from a preferred vendor...

The same way semi-custom cabinets do...

So really, there's not a difference in the materials being used to make these cabinets...

But why the heck are custom kitchen cabinets often times double to cost of semi-custom?

There's a few reasons why...

Custom kitchen cabinet shops, especially small local mom & pop shops (if there are any left by the time you read this) require a TON of over head to keep their doors open...

They have buildings to lease...

Massive sized CNC machines to purchase...

Dust containment systems...

Employees to hire, fire & manage...

Small business mindset, so they never think about "evolving" or "expanding" with the market and prefer to stay local... (Sorry, that's for the "old-timer" cabinet shops that refuse to evolve lol)

And MANY of them, don't have all of the machinery to make the job more time & cost effective, so they often times resort to doing many things the old fashioned way...

By hand...

Now if you value the "made by hand" guys, then by all means... Go for it!

Or if they do have the machinery, they don't have the skilled manpower to run everything efficiently...

So you end up having to pay a premium for the lack of efficiency...

And they're manufactured in bulk and usually sit in a warehouse, flat packed in a box waiting to be purchased...

Plus there's are options for weird spots in your kitchen that leave you with 5" gaps... Which can be filled with cool pullouts like the ones found at Rev-a-shelf...

And because semi custom cabinet frames are manufactured en mass in standard sizing, you as the end user save both money & time...

The only benefit of going with custom kitchen cabinets, is if you really wanted to have a cabinet that was 32 9/16" wide...

And if you're going to be miserable if you don't have your 32 9/16" wide cabinet, then you can expect to pay a premium price for that extra 2 9/16"...

That's really the key difference between custom & semi-custom...

But if you hire a designer that understands semi-custom kitchen cabinets (our design team does 300-500 semi custom kitchen every year), then going with standard sizing with a few pull out features is a phenomenal option...
